The History
Ybor City's Cuban Club since 1900

La Union Marti-Maceo originated in October 1900.  It was then called Los Libres Pensadores de Marti and Antonio Maceo - heroes of Cuban independence.  The founders were cigar makers in Tampa who had been actively involved in the independence movement.  The society began as a recreational and educational organization.  Full social and medical benefits were added in 1904, and the name was changed to reflect a merger with La Union, a mutual aid society.

Throughout the past century, literally thousands of people have rendered selfless and continuous services to maintain the continuity of Marti-Maceo.  In the early 1970's, the Marti-Maceo society experienced a revitalization.  A large number of former members, whom had moved away during the Depression, returned to Tampa and rejoined the club.  It was no longer practical to provide medical benfits, but the organization has continued to sponsor social activities, hold monthly meetings, and celebrate important national holidays.

Jose Marti (1835-1895) was born in Havana in 1853.  Jose Marti is considered one of the great writers of the Hispanic world.  Marti believed that freedom and justice should be the conerstone of any government. His writings condemn all despotic regimes and the abridgement of human rights.

Antonio Maceo (1848-1896), or General Antonio Maceo Grajales, was the second-in-command of the Cuban army of independence.  Commonly known as the "The Bronze Titan," Maceo was one of the the outstanding guerilla leaders in nineteenth century Latin America.
